Saturday 3rd September – Packing the van and Travelling to Surrey

We didn’t have to go too mad with getting ready because we weren’t leaving Felixstowe until after lunch. Andy Johnson is selling me his GT31 and he was in America until the early hours of this morning. He rung to say he was coming into Felixstowe anyway so he would bring it to us which he did around 11 a.m. We had some scrambled egg (next door’s eggs :)) for lunch and left around 2. We called at Specsavers to get another soft glasses case to put the GT31 in and realised we had forgotten both our wallets! Went back and set out again. We got into some heavy traffic after the Dartford bridge because the M20 was closed (going towards the shuttle in Kent). Last week a lorry hit and demolished half a footbridge and they are removing the rest of it over this weekend so we will have to work out how to get to the shuttle ourselves tomorrow:( Even with that hold up we were still at Robs by half 4 so 2 ½ hour journey which is very good! Rob and Hannah were playing with Molly, Boss David’s dog, in the car park when we got out of the van. We joined them taking Molly for a walk in the woods and when we were near the roundhouse it started to chuck it down! It had been drizzling but not too bad and none of us had coats so we tried to shelter in the trees but it wasn’t much good so basically we got pretty wet!! We had a cuppa and a chat then Rob and Mag went into the outskirts of Cranleigh to get fish and chips. We had sainsburys lemon tart for afters. We watched a couple of catchphrases then left to go to bed around 11. We are in the little staff car park near the caving tubes this time as there was a party in the burrow and our usual spot was taken.

Sunday 4th September Rob’s, walk at Newlands Corner **** and Travelling to France

Mag spotted a beautiful small deer emerging out of the laurel bushes right next to the van and luckily I managed to see it before it disappeared back into the shrubbery. We went into Rob and Hannah’s for breakfast around 9.30. We spent the morning with them chatting and catching up. We had cheese and pickle sandwiches for lunch then left Hannah gardening for her last afternoon off before returning to school tomorrow and Rob took us to Newlands Corner which has a great view over the Surrey countryside. Although the weather wasn’t brilliant at least it’s not raining today and we walked to St. Martha on the hill. A church about a mile and a half away through great forests and fields. Lovely walk but did feel for Rob because of his poor old knee. He is due to have knee surgery at the end of October :( We went back and took our Lidl lasagne into the flat for tea and we had that with some salad before saying our goodbyes and leaving for the bizarre route to the shuttle! It took us longer than we thought and although flying through the windy roads of Surrey, Sussex and Kent were quite a direct route there were lots of bends and speed limits so it was a nightmare. We got there around 9.10 when we should have been there at 8.50 and although the machine said they were putting us on the next one, leaving at 9.50 (our usual crossing time incidentally but had booked a bit earlier this time) they rushed us through with a scant look at our passport and no checking at the customs of gas or anything else, merged two crossings and we left around 9.35. Had a doze during the crossing, left the shuttle and drove to the car park at the Cap Blanc which overlooks the channel and we could see the lights of Dover twinkling across the water. It was after midnight French time when we got into bed – exhausted!
